Porches Named to Conde Nast Traveler UK’s 2002 Hot List
32 New Hotels Selected Worldwide, Including Eight in North America

North Adams, Mass. (April 25, 2002) – The British edition of Conde Nast Traveler has named The Porches Inn to its annual list of the world’s most distinctive new hotels.

The 2002 Hot List, featured in the magazine’s May issue, recognizes 32 properties on five continents that exhibit "a singular sense of style and place that sets them apart from even the best of the rest," along with excellent service. Six of the hotels are located in the United States, primarily in major cities.

Porches, which opened in July 2001, consists of six renovated Victorian-era buildings that originally provided housing for the area’s mill workers. Conde Nast cited the inn’s striking conversion from its proletarian roots, extolling the use of "ingenuity and wit to make the most of its blue-collar environs." Porches guest rooms are "smartly appointed" and bathrooms are "state of the art," according to the editors.

News of the award came as a surprise to Nancy Fitzpatrick, president of Porches, who teamed with project architect Ann McCallum on the design of the inn. "We’re delighted and honored to have been chosen," said Fitzpatrick, whose family owns The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge. "To be included among such spiffy new hotels is a real coup, and a feather in the caps of the Porches staff," she added.

The other U.S. hotels cited are the Hotel Monaco in New Orleans, Clift in San Francisco, Hotel Healdsburg in Sonoma County, and City Club Hotel and W Times Square in New York. The St. Paul Hotel in Montreal and the Deseo Hotel + Lounge in Mexico round out the North American selections.

Located across the street from MASS MoCA, Porches features an eye-opening synthesis of contemporary and retro design. The inn’s 50 rooms and suites are fully wired, offering high-speed DSL internet access, dual phone lines, and complimentary DVDs. The property includes a year-round outdoor pool, hot tub, sauna, and meeting rooms for retreats and special events.
